Raise your hand if you are a small business owner and you're kind of freaking out right now. Yeah, me too.
I'm freaking out because I'm scared. I'm scared for friends, parents, neighbors, family and honestly, myself. I'm staying home, washing my vegetables in extra hot water, and trying not to touch my face (failing at not touching my face is more like it). And my hands? Well there isn't enough cream in the world for my hands right now. If I wash them one more time, they might turn to dust. Being a small business owner, means that I am not only freaking out about staying well. I'm also freaking out because I'm scared for my business. I have friends who have shut their doors already, other entrepreneur friends who have started talking about going back to corporate jobs and some who simply spend all day in a downward spiral of social media negativity.
As small business owners, the buck stops here. If we don't put in the work, if we don't hold our heads high, if we fold under the weight of worry and fear, we will go out of business. But what if we don't buckle? What if, instead, we rise up?
We, as small business owners, have two choices. Sink. or swim. Which one are you choosing? We can freak out OR we can continue to BUILD the business that we love. We can dig our heels in, step AWAY from social media and do the hard work to ensure that when, God willing, we get through this, we have a BETTER business than we had going into this catastrophe. I'm choosing swim, what about you?
I'm taking the first step toward a better business by revisiting some of my favorite business books from the last ten years. And when I finish these, I am going to get to that list of new books that has been on hold. I have SO many business books that I want to read or reread but I haven't found the time. But now? Now we have the time to build our brand back up. We have the time to let our clients know that we love and appreciate them. We have a duty to our clients NOT to freak out. We have a duty to SWIM.
Who's with me?
The list is long for one blog post but most them are quick reads and I can't wait to get reaqainted with them!
The Go Giver: read this if you want to turn everything you believe about networking on it's head. Giving is a very powerful thing indeed.
The Pumpkin Plan: You don't have to work with everyone. In fact, don't work with everyone. Tend to the clients who are the best fit for your business and let the rest go.
The New Gold Standard: Ever want to know more about how one of the most impressive hotel chains in the industry continues to impress their luxury clients? Read this one.
Jab, Jab, Right Hook: Social media made simple. Every post is not designed to sell, every post is leading up to the post designed to sell.
The Tipping Point: I love this book. Sidenote: the auther uses as epidemic as his main points of an example. That your idea can spread like a virus, so we'll see how this one holds up given the circumstances.
The purple cow: Coming at you all the way from 2002! Don't be a brown cow, be a purple cow and you will stand out in the crowd. Be remarkable.
How to Win Friends and Influence People: This one gets me everytime. The title always makes me cringe a little but it's not about manipulation, it's about effective communication.I am also eager to read (for the first time) How to Win Friends and Influence People in the Digital Age I am very interested to see how his associates have adapted his original message to fit our brave new world.
Start with Why: Simon Sinek has a very, very, popular TED Talk and this book is so, so good. You need a WHY to build a strong business. What is your WHY?
7 Habits of Highly Effective People: A book that has been popular since 1989 has to be on your must read list. And then again on your must reread list. Adopt an abundance mindset, and you will find the path to success.
BONUS: Stephen King on Writing
