If there is one thing every couple wants, it's to find more hours in the day. If there's a second thing couples want, it's to spend more time with each other. The new tradition of a first look, accomplishes both of those things AND ensures your wedding day feels relaxed and fun from beginning to end.
Thinking about a first look? Here's a few reasons why you might love it!
1. More time with each other
On a typical wedding day, the ceremony is at 4 or 5 o'clock. That is a LONG time to wait to see your future spouse on your wedding day. With a first look, you see each other at 1:30 or 2pm. Then you get to spend all that time in between the first look and the ceremony soaking up your day with those most dear to you while taking gorgeous portraits! A first look means you can spend more time with your spouse AND relax and enjoy the portrait portion of your day because you aren't rushing through it, just trying to get to your reception!
2. More time to enjoy your cocktail hour and reception
Having a first look guarantees you will make most of your cocktail hour, something most couples want to do! After the ceremony, you may have a few more portraits to take, but for the most part, you are free to enjoy the party with your loved ones. You finished couple portraits, wedding party portraits, AND family formals before the ceremony, so all you have to do is relax and enjoy the party you spent so much time planning!
3. Enjoy the moment freely, privately, and for as long as you want.
The first look is not posed at all. We choose a location, chat about how you want to go about it (grab his and, tap her shoulder, softly call his name), then stand back with long lenses and let the moment unfold naturally. It's a truly intimate moment that you can enjoy for as long as you want to. There is plenty of time for posing suggestions later. This means, that the first time you see each other, there are no inhibitions and there aren't 80-300 other people watching. It's just you two, soaking up that "we're about to be married" feeling. It's beautiful.
4. More portrait location opportunities
The more relaxed timeline means that we can typically portraits in more locations without feeling rushed. More time is always a good thing. Feeling relaxed instead of rushed is always a good thing. First looks are a good thing. :)
So what do you think? Is a first look for you?
Not sure? That's ok! While a first look helps many couples accomplish their photography goals while also getting the most out of their day, there is no pressure. In fact, there will be another blog post coming soon, with options for couples who prefer not to do a first look but still want to try to make it to cocktail hour!
