Formal not forced: your Family portraits

“today's little moments become tomorrow's precious memories”

Family is a very important part of your story and we love to capture beautiful portraits of everyone. The words family formals can be less than exciting for some brides, but if we prepare, we can create beautiful images quickly and comfortably. We aim for formal photos that are natural and don't look or feel forced.

Questions about family formals inevitably come up on almost every phone consultation and are also one of the things we talk about when we are planning the timeline for your big day!

Do I take family formals? Yes!

I take family formals at every wedding I shoot. You decide how "formal" they are.

Do we work off a list? Yes! We use the list on the day of your wedding and cross combinations off as we go.

I have a info sheet I send out before your big day that asks LOTS of things, including, a family must have shot list. If that sounds overwhelming, don't worry! I send you a sample family combination list that we can tweak to help you get started!

Do I help you create a timeline and choose locations for the formals  Yes! I am always here to help make things easier for you.

After I have your list of must have family shots, I can give you an estimate of how much time it will take and we can build you the perfect timeline. Unless we are doing the family formals in an indoor location (like the beautiful alter at your church), it is very hard to choose a location prior to the day of your wedding because things like light play a large part in making your family look their best. We quickly choose the location for your family formals on the day of your wedding (and of course, ask for your input as we go!).

We schedule enough time for them that they are relaxed, everyone looks great, and so that everyone has (dare I say it?) FUN! These are your nearest and dearest and you definitely want some beautifully posed shots of everyone together mixed in with the candids that we are taking throughout the day.

Here's a few examples of family formals that came out fun and not forced from Kim & Jake's gorgeous tree farm wedding at Maple Row Farms in Easton, CT. Don't you just love this couple and their families?!?

Check back in soon for more "tidbits" to help you plan your special day!

J
